*That "free" phone deal comes with a monthly payment and a reason you can't leave. Here's how to skip both.*

If you're shopping for a new phone, buy it unlocked. You'll pay for the phone once, own it outright, and keep the freedom to choose (or change) your carrier whenever you want. Carrier deals look cheaper at the counter because the phone's cost is spread across your monthly bill. That doesn't make it free. It makes it harder to see, and harder to walk away from.

### **What's the catch with a carrier phone deal?**

Most carrier deals split the phone's price into monthly installments, often over 24 to 36 months, and offset some of it with bill credits. Sounds generous. Here's what that means in practice:

- **You're still paying for the phone.** It's just a line item on your bill instead of a receipt in your hand.
- **Leaving gets expensive.** Switch carriers early and the remaining credits usually disappear, while the remaining balance comes due.
- **The phone may be locked.** A locked phone only works with the carrier that sold it, at least until it's paid off.
- **Your plan gets harder to change.** Some deals require you to stay on a specific (usually pricier) plan to keep the credits.

None of that is hidden, exactly. It's in the fine print. But it turns a phone purchase into a multi-year commitment.

### **Why buy unlocked instead?**

An unlocked phone works with any compatible carrier. So what? So you're never stuck.

- **You see the real price.** One number, up front. Your monthly bill is just for service.
- **You can switch whenever you want.** Better plan somewhere else? Take your phone with you.
- **You can buy smarter.** Last year's model, a certified refurbished phone, or a holiday sale all work, as long as the phone is unlocked and compatible.

### **What to check before you buy**

A few minutes of homework saves a lot of hassle later.

1. **Make sure it's actually unlocked.** Look for "factory unlocked" or "carrier unlocked" in the listing. "Carrier-ready" or a carrier name in the title can mean it's tied to one network.
2. **Confirm it supports eSIM.** Most recent iPhones and Android flagships do. eSIM means no plastic SIM card to wait for. You activate it digitally.
3. **Check compatibility before checkout.** Run the phone's model (or IMEI, if you have it) through Ting's compatibility check at ting.com.
4. **Buying used or refurbished?** Choose a seller with a warranty and a return window, and make sure the phone isn't reported lost or stolen.
5. **Keep your old phone active for now.** Don't cancel your current service yet. That's how you keep your number.

### **How to activate your new phone on Ting with eSIM**

Once your unlocked phone arrives, getting on Ting takes a few steps.

1. **Back up your old phone.** Photos, contacts, two-factor authentication apps. Do this first.
2. **Get your number transfer info.** From your current carrier, you'll need your account number and a transfer PIN. Most carriers let you generate the PIN in their app or online account.
3. **Sign up and choose eSIM.** Order Ting Mobile at ting.com, select eSIM, and enter your transfer info to bring your number with you.
4. **Install your eSIM.** Follow the activation prompts on your new phone. Usually that means scanning a QR code or tapping through a setup screen.
5. **Make a test call.** Once your number moves over, your old service closes out on its own. No need to call and cancel.

Stuck on a step? [Ting's support team](https://www.ting.com/contact-us) is made up of real people who can walk you through it.

Ready to make the switch? Check your phone's compatibility at [ting.com](http://ting.com), then bring your number over with eSIM.
