Why "up to" numbers rarely show up in real life
Cable and DSL providers advertise a ceiling, the best-case number under perfect conditions, shared infrastructure, no network congestion, right router placement. Real-world speeds on those connections often land well below the advertised number, especially during evening peak hours when everyone on your street is streaming at once.
Fiber works differently because it isn't shared the same way. A dedicated fiber line to your home means the number on your plan is closer to the number you actually get, whether it's 7pm on a Tuesday or 2am.
What fiber speed actually means for your household
The national median download speed is about 305 Mbps, and the median upload is about 57 Mbps (Ookla, December 2025). Ting runs symmetrical 1 Gig and 2 Gig plans, meaning upload matches download instead of lagging behind it.
Here's what that looks like in practice:
- Downloading a 100 GB game takes about 13 minutes on 1 Gig fiber versus roughly 44 minutes at the US median speed.

Upload is the part most people never check
Most speed marketing focuses on download because it's the bigger number. But upload is what determines how fast your video call sends your video, how fast files land in the cloud, and how fast you can post or stream your own content. Ting runs the same speed both directions. Xfinity's gigabit plan caps upload around 250 Mbps, worth checking before you assume "gigabit" means the same thing everywhere.
How to know what you're actually getting
Run a wired speed test at a few different times of day. If the number holds steady close to what you're paying for, your connection is doing its job. If it dips hard during peak hours, that's a sign of shared or oversubscribed infrastructure, not something you did wrong.
