This month's Ting Internet Employee Spotlight shines on Heather Smith, a product manager who has been with the company for two years. Heather shares her experience navigating the tech industry as a woman, her excitement for the future of technology and advice for aspiring women in tech.

Tell us a little bit about your work at Ting.

My role involves taking what our customers want and need and turning it into concrete offerings, such as a great internet product with special offers like low-cost mobile plans.

What are some challenges you faced in your career in tech and how have you overcome them?

I started early in the tech environment, I went to school for engineering. The biggest challenge is being the only woman, or one of the few women, on my team. My advice is to go with the flow, try new things, be yourself and be confident. It's scary to fit in, but you must work through it.

What excites you about the future of technology?

As a product manager, I'm always looking at new technologies and how they can create solutions. I think of advancements like AI and VR. These advancements are built on each other, creating a chain reaction of positive change. The technology boom is just starting and it's going to grow and grow.

What advice would you have for women interested in pursuing a career in tech?

Keep your confidence and stand your ground. Don't be afraid of imposter syndrome. Also, trying things quickly and not being afraid to fail, that's how you learn the most.

Be intentional in what you do. Keep an open mind and embrace diverse teams and perspectives. And lastly, be open to feedback and always assume positive intent.

What are some ways you use technology to connect with others?

Social media is something that keeps us connected. It’s also cool that technology can help us work remotely and connect with people we aren't physically with. It’s still a challenge sometimes in remote work environments and I think improvements can be made to foster genuine connections among coworkers.

Who are some women in tech who have inspired you and why?

I was lucky to go to a school where it had the highest percentage of female engineers at 30%. And so I have a network of people who are in tech and facing similar challenges—they are a great source of inspiration!
