Embrace the internet with these tech podcasts

Explore different sides of the internet you might miss in your day-to-day surfing with these tech podcasts.

I love a good podcast. I usually listen to them to make household chores more enjoyable and to feel like I’m ‘expanding my horizons’. In the spirit of Ting and the internet, I’ve done some browsing (and listening) to share some great podcasts, where you too can learn something new about the internet.

There’s a pretty good mix here—unbelievable internet stories, professional news and education. My personal favorite is the Darknet Diaries, if you, like me, have always subconsciously wondered what goes on in the elusive ‘dark web’.

The Vergecast
Hosted by Nilay Patel, David Pierce and Alex Cranz

This podcast gets into the gadgets of it all. If you’re really into smart home hacks or the latest device—this is the one for you. Of the episodes I’ve listened to my favorite was “The future of AI might look a lot like Twitter”.

Hard Fork
Hosted by Kevin Roose and Casey Newton

This podcast, produced by the New York Times, is a great objective podcast about the world of tech today. Recently, their topics have centered around AI as it is probably the biggest conversation in tech right now. If you’re interested in understanding different and new use cases of AI this could be a great pick for your next listen.

Stuff You Should Know
Hosted by “Josh and Chuck”

I love this podcast for the random learnings you get. No matter what niche interests you have, they probably have an episode for you here. But the main reason I’ve included it in this list is because of a great episode called “True Mysteries of the Internet”.

TED Tech
Hosted by Sherrell Dorsey

Similar to the famous TED Talks you find on YouTube, TED Tech brings a new speaker in each episode. The guest speaker shares insights on anything from virtual reality to the Internet to Things. Again, lots of AI themes on this podcast, so the episode I would recommend will stray from that theme. I enjoyed the episode “Quantum computers aren’t what you think – they’re cooler | Hartmut Neven”. I didn’t even know what a quantum computer was, so it was super enjoyable to learn something new and Neven explains it in a digestible way.

Darknet Diaries
Hosted by Jack Rhysider

This is the podcast I found the most intriguing. It covers varying topics and stories of the dark web. To me, the dark web has always been this elusive concept and so the episodes of this podcast I listened to have been thrilling like a true crime podcast. They give the listener a window into a darker side of the world, or in this case, the world of the internet, that the average person isn’t usually exposed to.

Search Engine
Hosted by PJ Vogt

Search Engine is a podcast aptly named, answering the weird questions that show up in Google Search. A cool episode that was recommended to me by a co-worker is “How do you make an addictive video game?” This episode features guest speaker Ben Brode, the designer of Hearthstone and Marvel Snap.
