How to spot Internet promotional pricing traps

Many Internet providers use price traps to make you pay more than you expect. Learn how to spot the tricks and look past the bold headline rates.

Your Internet plan shouldn't be designed to confuse you. Unfortunately, many are, with Internet service providers (ISPs) benefitting from hidden fees, forced bundles, and promo traps. At Ting, we want the Internet to work for you, not the other way around. We've laid out three of the most common tricks ISPs use to charge you more, as well as how to spot and avoid them.

The top 3 promo traps and how to avoid them

Intro pricing

If the monthly price looks too good to be true, it might be. Many ISPs use 'intro rates', which are temporarily low prices that go up after a certain period of time. Providers will use asterisks or fine print to bury this detail so you miss it until it's too late. Make sure you read the fine print before signing anything. To further protect yourself, ask the sales representative or check the summary of charges for the post-promotion price

Annual price hikes

It's all too common for ISPs to have an annual price hike built into their contracts, commonly in the spring. This should be disclosed in your contract. Before signing, be sure to look for contractual clauses mentioning "annual rate adjustments" or inflation-linked markups.

Hidden fees

Some Internet providers use what's known as 'hidden fees' to increase the cost for people, while keeping the monthly rate down. These often include activation and installation fees, discretionary and surcharges, or Early Termination Fees (leaving before your contract is up). All Internet providers are required to list an itemized breakdown of their fees in what's known as an FCC Broadband Nutrition Label. You can use this to check what you are actually going to be charged for. Here is Ting's as an example.

Avoiding hidden fees and other promo traps

When you're looking for a new ISP, make sure to explore your options. As more options become available, you have more power to decide what Internet and provider is right for you. If anything is confusing, or doesn't seem quite right, ask the service representative to clarify it for you.
